3 Pillars eLearning

Client

Mosa is a freelance K-12 instructor specializing in arts education for African, Black, and Caribbean (ABC) youth. Mosa has 35 years of classroom teaching experience, during which she developed an educational method for delivering culturally relevant curriculum. She is now establishing an educational consulting business by which to package and deliver this method through a series of curricular offerings entitled, Uplifting the Black Child, to K-12 educators working with ABC youth. Mosa needs a strategy to clearly communicate her educational method to target audiences provincially, and to recruit for participation in market research for the seed stage consultancy.

Problem

Mosa identified the performance problem as a result of her decades of experience delivering youth arts education with public school systems. For K-12 educators, there is a lack of awareness and access to the educational resources needed to develop and advocate for culturally relevant curriculum for ACB students.

Solution

The learning solution is an introductory eLearning module which communicates the rationale and guiding principles, or ‘3 Pillars’, for delivering culturally relevant curriculum for ABC youth. This eLearning module will serve as the introduction to a more comprehensive curriculum, to be developed in response to market research findings.

Why this solution?

  • eLearning provides an engagement strategy to assess whether target audiences have a baseline understanding of the 3 Pillars model.

  • The module allows for meaningful yet time-limited interaction that fits the timeframe of market research interviews, for feedback on eLearning as a possible method of delivery for the full Uplifting the Black Child curriculum.

  • eLearning allows for facile distribution via website, email, and social media channels to gain a wide geographic reach to a new client base.

  • eLearning allows for a visually rich and interactive depiction of culturally specific elements of the Uplifting the Black Child curriculum.

Learning Objective

The objective of the eLearning module is to generate memory and recall of the ‘3 Pillars’ guiding principles of the Uplifting the Black Child curriculum.

Process

I applied ADDIE methodology for the eLearning module design:

ANALYSIS

I led a series of structured conversations with the client to clarify the business problem being addressed through the learning solution, identify her target learning audiences, clarify the learning content and considerations for its delivery, identify the performance problem, learning objective, potential benefit to the target audience, and to identify evaluation strategies for applying the eLearning module within planned market research. From these conversations, I developed a thorough Project Analysis document including key instructional design considerations for the client’s consulting business, and which served as a guideline for development of the functional introductory eLearning module.

DESIGN

Design involved storyboarding to clarify a scenario-based approach to achieve the learning objective. I created a branding template based on discussions around the intended tone of the eLearning module, including professionalism, Afrocentricity, and creativity. I used AI image generation to create character and backdrop illustration mock-ups, which I revised through iterative conversations with the client.

DEVELOPMENT

I authored all graphic design using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Character Animator, and by adapting Adobe Firefly AI imagery through custom illustration. I used Figma to prototype and develop the module, with feedback and input from the client regarding visual design preferences. I consulted with the client throughout development to ensure clarity of written content and appropriate portrayal of cultural symbols. I developed and published the module to the web using Articulate 360.

IMPLEMENTATION

Implementation will take place through the delivery of the eLearning module within market research, and through marketing engagement with the client’s existing professional networks.

EVALUATION

Summative evaluation to assess learning outcomes includes a quiz embedded within the eLearning module. Evaluation to inform further development of the curricular offering will include market research focus group questions regarding learner experience, usability, and applicability of the learning content to K-12 educational practice. Instructional design process evaluation with the client included a google survey form and verbal feedback at regular intervals, to assess client’s satisfaction and usefulness of the learning design service.
